Chinese Keemun (sometimes spelled Qimen) black tea has a long and famous history. Plucked from the Anhui Province, this deliciously dark, luxuriant leaf was the first traditional tea used in the original English Breakfast. It was shipments of this tea that the first cannon shots were fired into that started The Opium Wars. Keemun is often compared to fine Burgundy Wines for its smooth, slightly sweet, and toasty flavor with cocoa-like notes.
The Brew Ha-Ha:
Black Tea comes from the leaves of the Camellia Sinensis bush that are harvested from the Spring, Summer, and Fall that are allowed to undergo an oxidization process. This causes the tea leaves to ripen to a dark brown or black color. The more oxidization the tea leaves are exposed to determines the flavor of the Black Tea, which can run a pretty wide gamut from mild and sweet to smoky, malty, earthen, and dense and stronger. It is a full-bodied tea that contains a lot of antioxidants and promotes heart health, has anti-cancer agents, fights inflammation, and works as a digestive aid.
